Students'opinions about the courses

"Without a doubt, interesting discussions and debates are crucial for an appreciation of environmental history and justice issues, and Marco's classes have these in spades. Marco's wealth of information, insight and obvious delight in his subjects made attending his classes both informative and enjoyable". Simon Colman (Environmental History and Political Ecology at UAB 2010/11)

"If I have to describe or give my opinion about the classes on Environmental History in few words I would say: ‘It was challenging’. I have never before thought how many connections are there between environment and human cultures. It was really interesting to see connection between mosquitoes and some very important moments in America’s history; to see how important for people could be beautiful view on a bay, even more than high risk of fire, etc.
On our classes we had very good atmosphere and Marco had been encouraging us to express our own opinions and to actively participate in a class. Although, sometimes was quite hard to say anything, Marco had always found some interesting and funny story to make clear some complex issue. All in all, I really enjoy both classes and Marco’s teaching".

"More than a didactic conveyor of knowledge Prof. Armiero has a particular style of lecturing which has been much useful and admirable within my academic experience. By creating an atmosphere of aperture for thorough and friendly discussion, his classes on environmental history were beyond the common lecture experience, allowing for wide scope of insights and knowledge sharing". João Lampreia Joint European Master in Environmental Sciences Sustainable Energy Planning Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona & Aalborg University

I never thought Environmental History was so interesting and hooking. Marco's high human quality and his proximity made a perfect environment to deliberate and debate about topics I did not think they could be included in this subject. He really conveyed delight and passion for what he taught us. Amaia Albizua (Environmental Studies, Ecological Economics Speciality. University Autonomous of Barcelona)

The course was very interesting and stimulating and allowed me to perceive history from a completely different perspective from that one I was used to. Viviana Asara, PhD candidate, Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

"My name is Nazli Koseoglu, I took Marco Armiero´s Environmental History class during my first semester of environmental science master at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. As a student coming from engineering background, the course helped me to associate and understand the historical backgrounds of and mechanísms behind the past and current environmental conflicts. For me the one of the best part of the course was the research proposal assignment because I think it is a very educating and practical work for those who wish to pursue an academic carreer afterwards" Nazli Koseoglu

Storia ambientale? Manuela Stendardo (Università L'Orientale, Napoli, Italy) [Environmental History? Before meeting Prof. Armiero I did not even know the meaning of such a discipline. It is thanks to him if I became passionate about the discipline. I worked with him for several months for my BA thesis and what I have appreciated mostly was his dedication to students and his ability to explain complicated matters in a clear way]

I knew Marco Armiero when he was teaching contemporary  and environmental history at Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples, Italy. I was immediately impressed by his passion and openness to the different  spurs and ideas that came from his students. He accepted to became supervisor of my BA dissertation in 2004. During the research and the writing of my work he showed me a sincere and careful attitude. Those months of mutual confrontation gave origin to a strong tie made of respect and friendship that allowed me to fully appreciate his bold, enthusiast and committed  intellectual journey. Mario De Prospo, Phd in History of Europe, Istituto Superiore di Scienze Umane, Italy

Francesca Morano, Universita' degli Studi di Napoli L'Orientale [My name is  Francesca Morano. I graduated in Political Sciences at the University Orientale in Naples. I am a former student of Professor Armiero who actually acted as my tutor for my Laurea dissertation. For this reason I have had the opportunity to work with him closely for some time and therefore I have an idea of him and of his way of working. We have been in syntony immediatly and this has helped my work for the dissertation. Yes, he made me work hardly but at the same time he was always there to make things easier for me. I want to say that he has been a very rigorous professor but also a very human person; he has always been very accessible to every one of us and  can say that he has had a good relationships with all his students. I have a very positive opinion of him and I have good memories of our work together. I have to add that inspite of his important positions  which he got during the years, even when he left Italy, he has remained a very humble person and I like this quality.] Francesca Morano, University of Naples, L'Orientale, Italy

My name us Lucia Argüelles, I am industrial engineer graduated in Universidad de Oviedo, Spain. I am currently studying a Erasmus Mundus MSc program in Environmental Studies. I met Marco last year, he was my professor of the Environmental History class. He also taught some of the classes of Political Ecology, the most interesting class I have ever had. I enjoyed his interesting lessons with a great perspective. I consider his teaching method as the most appropriate for this kind of topics. Apart from that, what I really like from him is his incomparable closeness to the students. We have had great discussions outside the clasroom and he is always willing to help us with our work. Thanks, Marco! Lucia Argüelles -   Erasmus Mundus MSc program in Environmental Studies

I met Marco Armiero in Naples, at some meetings of social and environmental movements about waste problems in Naples and in Campania Region, while I was about to develop my PhD thesis in Geography of Development regarding the same issue. I am grateful to Marco: he introduced me to the international research on environmental justice, that he uses as research approach also in his studies on Italian environmental history. His research represents an important effort to develop an Italian environmental history that put in evidence the interrelations among social and ecological problems. His research is made, as a geographer would say, with his boot in the mud: a participatory approach that is also based on his human qualities, that permit to take care of the reasons of the marginalized part of society, often set aside in the academic studies. Moreover his international experience as scholar was very useful to me during my period of research abroad at the university of Berkeley and Stanford, and enabled me to know the interesting and innovative researches of ICTA.

I consider Marco one of my friends and scholars closer to my research interests and to my political sensitivity. Simon Maurano (PhD in Geography of development, Università L'Orientale, Naples, Italy)
